Why Should We Hire You – The Apt Reply

This post is contributed by Stelvio Cappes.

Every time an interviewer asks, “Why should we hire you”, I can almost sense the applicant sweating in his seat. These questions are common, typical and yet perplex the applicant because you never know what your interviewer actually wants to hear. Before giving you pointers on dodging this question, I would recommend you to read the expert article be Deniz if you are looking for a why should we hire you  answer in the most impeccable manner.

Should you sell yourself entirely?

Well, the answer is both a yes and a no. When you are being interviewed, you definitely need to sell yourself as this is why you are there. You need the job and you are skilled enough to fill in the vacancy. The only thing left is to convince your interviewer that you are the best fit they have been looking for.

Now, when they ask you ‘why should we hire you’, you have plenty of options at hand. Let us see what they are.

  1. Chip in a funny line and use humor to lighten the atmosphere

  2. Give them a blank look because you do not really have a reason to say

  3. Go on and on about how you are the most awesome applicant

Does any of it look like the right thing to do? Definitely, no! This brings us back to square one as you still need to know how to handle this question.

The solution

The ideal thing to do is to give them incentives to hire you. Your action needs to speak as much as your words.

You can have a very short presentation ready which will help them see the skills you possess. Now, when we say a short presentation, we do so for two reasons.

  • You do not really know if you will be asked this question and whether they will let you play your presentation.
  • The interviewers are likely to interview too many people and they may not have a whole lot of time at hand.

So, keep the presentation short. Ideally, 2 or 3 slides work best. Now, the question in your mind would be what should the presentation state. Right? Let us get down to it.

  • Your prior experience if any

  • Your problem-solving skills

  • Any specific skill you have

  • A very brief detail of your educational qualifications

So, make sure to go through the slides and explain how your skills will be an asset to the firm. Ideally, by the time you are done with the presentation, your interviewers should be really impressed and they should be the ones who are eager to have you on board.

If you still need more tips, I will recommend you to read the expert article by Deniz wherein he talks about “why should we hire you over other candidates“. He is the creator of The Career Mastery and works with PwC Consulting.

Use the tips and have a splendid interview!
